A particular focus is on the integration of long-term storage systems—especially earth-based thermal storage basins—into municipal and industrial heating networks. Erdbeckenwärmespeicher (Pit Thermal Energy Storage, PTES) gewinnen als zentrale Flexibilitätsoption in dekarbonisierten Wärmesystemen zunehmend an Bedeutung. Sie ermöglichen die großskalige Integration erneuerbarer Wärmequellen wie Solarthermie, unvermeidbare Abwärme oder Power-to-Heat und leisten einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur Entkopplung von Wärmeerzeugung und -verbrauch. 
Der Vortrag beleuchtet die Rolle dieser Speichertechnologie anhand mehrerer aktueller Projekte in Deutschland, mit einem besonderen Fokus auf der Machbarkeitsstudie Merzenich-Bürgewald in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Im Projekt wurde untersucht, wie ein Erdbeckenwärmespeicher eine nachhaltige Wärmeversorgung unterstützen, lokale erneuerbare Energien nutzbar machen und einen hohen lokalen Deckungsgrad für die Strom- und Wärmeversorgung ermöglichen kann. Die Ergebnisse wurden mithilfe simulationsbasierter Analysen bewertet, um eine technisch und wirtschaftlich tragfähige Lösung zu identifizieren. 
Neben systemischen Aspekten werden auch projektspezifische Herausforderungen adressiert, insbesondere geologische Rahmenbedingungen, integrative Planung von Speicher und Wärmenetz sowie Auswirkungen auf Wirtschaftlichkeit und Betrieb. So zeigt sich beispielsweise, dass Wärmeverluste insbesondere über den Speicherdeckel auftreten, während der Einfluss des Grundwassers auf die Effizienz geringer ist als häufig angenommen.

Pit Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) systems are becoming increasingly important as a key flexibility option in decarbonized heating systems. They enable the large-scale integration of renewable heat sources such as solar thermal energy, unavoidable waste heat, or power-to-heat and make a decisive contribution to decoupling heat generation from heat consumption.
This presentation examines the role of this storage technology based on several current projects in Germany, with a particular focus on the Merzenich-Bürgewald feasibility study in North Rhine-Westphalia. The project investigated how a pit thermal energy storage system can support a sustainable heat supply, harness local renewable energy sources, and enable a high local self-sufficiency rate for electricity and heat supply. The results were evaluated using simulation-based analyses to identify a technically and economically viable solution.
In addition to systemic aspects, project-specific challenges are also addressed, particularly geological conditions, the integrated planning of the storage facility and the heating network, and the impacts on economic viability and operation. For example, the analysis shows that heat losses occur primarily through the storage cover, while the influence of groundwater on efficiency is less significant than is often assumed.
The presentation provides practical insights into the successful implementation of earth-pool heat storage systems.
