Development of an integrated heating and gas network strategy using the digital twin

Marc-André Triebel, Cross-Sector Energy Infrastructure Planning, Greenventory

Until now, the separate planning of heating, gas and electricity networks has led to missed synergies, misaligned investment cycles and avoidable civil engineering costs. This presentation shows how integrated, data-driven infrastructure planning transforms isolated, silo-based approaches into a coordinated system strategy.

Based on practical experience from over 500 local authorities, a digital twin brings together more than 100 heterogeneous data sources – from network data to climate models. The focus is on three key aspects:

  1. Cross-sector route planning: Massive reduction in civil engineering costs through synchronised infrastructure works
  2. Scenario-based gas network transformation: Objective analysis and evaluation of decommissioning options, biomethane and hydrogen pathways
  3. From municipal heating plans to implementation: Direct linking of municipal heating plans with downstream, fundable projects

The result: Decision-makers are moving away from static reports towards a dynamic, self-updating planning platform that sets out annual investment roadmaps for achieving climate neutrality by 2045.

Beschreibung_en

Marc-André Triebel is a mechanical and energy engineer with many years’ experience in project development and management for neighbourhoods, cities and grid areas. At greenventory, he is responsible for cross-sector energy infrastructure planning. His career prior to joining greenventory included, amongst other things, research-based energy system analysis of neighbourhoods in both national and international contexts. The focus of his work on numerous infrastructure planning and heating planning projects, such as those in Bielefeld and Dortmund, lies on the development of cross-sectoral target scenarios and the collaborative identification of action plans.
